Upper School Curriculum

Tome Upper School students continue to prepare for success in college and the world by combining a rigorous academic program of honors level classes with opportunities for leadership and service to the community.  The curriculum is designed to provide the students with a well-rounded liberal arts education with an emphasis on math, science, literature and writing skills.  Although Calculus AB is the only AP course offered at Tome, many Upper School students choose to study independently for and take AP exams.  Over the past three years, 58 students took 93 AP exams with an overall 74% pass rate.

A student who successfully completes the Upper School curriculum will present 24 academic credits to colleges – eight in English and four each in history, mathematics, science and foreign language.  In addition, qualified students are offered dual enrollment options with Cecil College and the University of Delaware.  Virtually all graduates go on to college.

Students in Grade 9 – 12 complement their academic achievements and training through a competitive varsity and junior varsity sports program, a variety of clubs and extracurricular activities,.  The 2009-10 school year produced winning teams in most Tome varsity sports programs and Maryland Independent League championships in soccer, basketball and baseball.  Students interested in the visual and performing arts and writing have opportunities to develop their skills through participation on the yearbook staff, the literary magazine, in the drama club and participation in the talent show.
