Tome School College Counseling Program - Finding a “Good Fit”
Tome students prepare for college every day by taking challenging, college-preparatory courses, taking advantage of leadership opportunities, and working hard. We encourage students to become fully involved in the academic, social and extracurricular life of Tome School during their four years in upper school and to develop individual interests for which they have a passion. This way, the college process becomes a natural part of a student's life, and not the all-consuming focus of his or her entire upper school experience.
Ninth and tenth graders meet with the college counselor in the beginning of the school year to discuss “the big picture.” This includes what colleges will be looking for and what they should be doing to prepare. Letters are sent to parents to encourage the discussion to continue at home. Freshmen and sophomores take the PSAT in October. In addition, a College Night for Sophomores takes place in May which provides information on making the most of a college visit.
College counseling becomes more formal during the junior year. Juniors attend college representative visits (at Tome), take the PSAT in October, and take a trip to the National College Fair in Baltimore in November. In January, students and parents attend College Night for Juniors, the most important meeting of this process. Topics include the college search, admission tests, financial aid, role of parents, and calendar of activities. Individual conferences with the college counselor take place throughout the spring. Then the class meets with the counselor in May for a college essay workshop and to discuss summer duties.
In the fall of senior year, students and parents attend Senior Application Night in September. Students meet with the counselor as often as necessary as they complete applications and research scholarships. The school takes responsibility for mailing transcripts, letters of recommendations and all supporting documents.
We want our students and their families to feel informed and empowered so they can actually enjoy this complex and often stress—filled process. Our goal is to help students identify and apply to colleges that offer opportunities and challenges that match their individual aspirations, needs, and interests. Communication is considered to be very important and is accomplished through the “College Corner” in the Friday Flyer, upper school bulletin boards, and individual conferences whenever requested.
