About Us
The Tome School is an independent, coeducational, college preparatory school founded in 1889 by Port Deposit philanthropist Jacob Tome. High academic standards, a challenging curriculum and a dedicated, caring faculty are the backbone of a strong college preparatory program.
During the 2010-2011 school year, Tome students took first place in the Cecil County Envirothon and represented Cecil County in the state Destination Imagination tournament, and took top honore in the American Legion’s Americanism Essay competition. In addition, three Tome seniors were recognized as National Merit Commended Scholars and seven were recognized in the MD Distinguished Scholars program. The thirty-two members of Class of 2011 graduated on June 5 with merit-based scholarship offers totaling over $2.7 million and plans to attend colleges and universities throughout the United States. The Tome School is located in North East on a beautiful 100-acre campus and continues to be true to its mission of providing a quality education at an affordable cost to students in the tri-state area.
Tuition is significantly lower at Tome than at other independent schools, partly because of the substantial funding from The Jacob Tome Institute and partly because of parental assistance. Efforts by Tome families have held tuition increases to a minimum.

Why Choose Tome:

Elizabeth Wohner - Interim Director Tome School offers a strong academic program. But more than that, we teach children - not subjects. The school is a strong, family-based community where children are known and loved for who they are, and who they become as they grow. |

Bryan Dawson, Class of 2010: When I first came to Tome in 9th grade I fully expected to be challenged to the limits of my ability. What I never expected was that in four short years I would develop such strong bonds with my fellow students. I have learned that at Tome you are never truly alone. It is the hidden beauty of this place. Tome has not only given me a solid academic foundation, but also an extended family that I will carry with me always. |

Katherine Lesniak, Class of 2010: Coming from a family which moved as often as every nine months, I remember entering Tome in the sixth grade unable to fathom the fact that I would go to the same school for the next six years. This prospect was terrifying, but Tome's teachers and students really created a welcoming atmosphere and greeted me with open arms. My years at Tome have been ones full of laughter, tears, failures, and triumphs. Each year has helped to shape me to become a more confident and well-rounded person. |

Aimee Little, Faculty: The environment at Tome is one where learning is fun, students are challenged to work hard, and encouraged to do their best. This philosophy underlies not just academics, but extracurricular sports and activities, and the many service projects with which the school is involved. The great thing about Tome is that the school is robust enough to offer a multitude of opportunities, but small enough to provide unique classroom experiences and field trips, while still focusing on traditions, core values, and really getting to know one another. This close-knit community of peers, teachers, and families really supports students in cultivating a genuine desire to strive for success that is unique to each individual. It's incredible to see and feel the pride that people have for Tome! |

Katherine Maisano, Faculty: Tome is a vibrant learning community with all the vital qualities of an exceptional school. Its teachers are passionate, dedicated, and knowledgeable professionals who challenge their students to perform at their highest ability level, encourage them to be productive, independent learners, and support them in all of their efforts. In addition, Tome’s equally committed students are intellectually curious, open to change and new ideas, and willing both to work hard themselves to achieve their goals and to support and encourage each other. The coming together of these two groups in classrooms every day creates the perfect foundation for productive learning and personal intellectual growth. It is a great place to teach as well as to study.

Kenneth Wohner, Faculty:
A day at Tome starts with Dr. Williams and staff greeting our students as they enter. Our youngest students go to Lower School where their teachers help them build their educational foundation, the Middle School teachers encourage students to develop their talents, and the Upper School teachers support students and sharpen their skills as they prepare to go on to college. Our goal is to prepare our students for college and we find many fun and interesting ways to do this. We believe in teaching our students to be the best they can be. Oh yes, we also hug our seniors when they graduate. |
